Private wine tour to the Priorat from Barcelona
A delightful full-day tour of three of the most fascinating designer wine houses in the Priorat wine district! Built by the architect of the same name, Seyer Mortinel, a disciple and follower and later rival of Antonio Gaudia. It was while working on the project of the Sagrada Familia cathedral in Barcelona, that Antoni Gaudi and Seijer Mortinel went their separate ways.
Our tour will begin with the Coopérative Sayer Falset Marsa, which has a century-old history, founded in 1912, comprising more than 350 small wineries. The members of the cooperative are families of farmers who have lived in the Priorat for generations, and have worked these lands with love and care. They know their work thoroughly and every inch of the land. The cooperative partners own these lands and work them themselves growing grapes. They stand firm on this project, and know that a good result is to work the vineyards all year long, for the highest quality.
Next we will pass through the first Carthusian monastery, founded in the Iberian Peninsula, so it is of special value and declared a historical and artistic monument. The monastery was built in the XII century. Until today the church has survived, which was completed in the XVIII century.
For many centuries the wine making in Priory was engaged by the Carthusian monks. Most of the vineyards are situated on stone terraces. Yields are very low, about 2-3 thousand kilograms per hectare, but of outstanding quality. It was in this town that Seyer Mortinel's family lived, where he absorbed the culture of winemaking with his mother's milk and his father's love of carpentry. It was from this town that the new era of winemaking of Priorato began, thanks to the enthusiasm of former journalist Carlos Pastrana and his wife Mariona Harquet.
At the end of the 70s they began to look at the region, and a few years later at their peril they bought vineyards and an old farmhouse here. Gradually a group of like-minded people from different European countries formed around Carlos and Mariona, many of whom are no longer working in the region today. The first brand that conquered specialists and amateurs was Clos de l'Obac (L'Obac is a place in the Priorato).
The brands of the famous wines of the new Priorato were created in accordance with the ancient traditions of the monastery of Scala Dei. Manuscripts dating back to 1628 are kept in the National Historical Archive of Madrid.
After visiting such an outstanding place we will go to the greatest architectural creation of Seyar Mortinel, the Seyar Gandessa winery built in 1919. We will be able to see the greatest fermentation room in Spain and taste the luxurious wines of the region.
Then our way goes to the wine cellars of Seyar Javier Cloix, one of the relatives of Seyar Martinel, who perfectly preserved the tradition of winemaking of the family and dedicated his life to the cultivation of grapes and wine production.
The latest generation, led by Javier Cloyes, combines experience, winemaking tradition with higher education. New techniques and methods of working with vineyards and wine products are being introduced. The new center combines a small but modern architecture, which facilitates daily work in the winery, with an inherited tradition and love for the land.
